Howard S. Cohen,
Founder (1936-2006)

HSC Management derives its name from the initials of its founder, Howard S. Cohen, who started the company from scratch over 40 years ago. Having grown up in Brooklyn during the Depression, Mr. Cohen was a tough, but warm-hearted old-school businessman who built the organization on a foundation of honesty, integrity and hard work. He was known for the trust his clients placed in him, and always insisted that anyone who worked for him must deliver exceptional customer service and complete dedication to each property owner’s success.

Mr. Cohen was also one of the first in the industry to foresee the convergence of real estate management and online access, helping pave the way for the highly-connected services provided to tenants, vendors and owners today.

In addition to his commitment to his clients, Mr. Cohen was a deeply devoted family man, looking after his beloved wife, three daughters and seven grandchildren. The family bond extended to his son-in-law, Josh Koppel, who is now the President and CEO of HSC Management Company.

Josh learned the business by shadowing his father-in-law on rent collection runs and, in his words, “constantly asking questions about property management and how it worked.” Having left a job on Wall Street, Josh quickly learned he loved the business. “The action, the people, the doing whatever it takes to get the job done right – it’s really energizing. You get to help people, you get to build, you get to see progress. I couldn’t have the passion I have for my work if I didn’t love what I’m doing.”

Now a Certified Property Manager and the leader of one of the select property management companies awarded the Accredited Management Organization (AMO®), Josh Koppel is focused on maintaining the principles and work ethic on which the company was founded. “I’ve tried to emulate my father-in-law, and now my son is coming to work with us after graduating from Syracuse University. We still manage properties that his grandfather began the business with over 40 years ago, and we intend to keep that spirit of dedication to our clients going as we continue to grow and serve property owners throughout the New York area and beyond.”
